Caution never hurts, so testing different color depths isn't a bad idea.

However, this comment started me wondering how necessary this precaution really is nowadays. 24 bit color (which includes so-called 32 bit color, which is really only enhanced 24 bit, according to an ex-colleague involved in xfree86 development)has been standard for at least three years. Given that many companies write off their computers every three years, couldn't we safely assume that most users would be using 24 bit color?

Yes, I suppose that, in theory, some users might deliberately reduce their color depth for greater speed. However, anyone likely to do that should also know enough to change it as necessary - or so I figure.

Are there any circumstances, I wonder, under which 24 bit color could NOT be assumed?
