"Utilize" drives me crazy. What is it with corp types that they just can't use direct language? I usually go through and do a universal find and replace. Another pet peeve is this regional impulse to attach a preposition to every verb! They can't just say "Join", they have to say "on joining", etc, then dangle it out there like a vagrant participle. They blame it on "government speak"--so I downloaded a really well written current govt doc and passed it around, and they ignored the hint! Makes me wanna grab my crotch and say "on this"! ; )

In this case, I can think of two reasons to prefer "use":

1.) People process shorter words faster than long ones.

2.) It saves space (as you say) without changing the meaning.
