Forget the classes. Take anything. Take what you like. Take what they give
you. But play chess often, write for everything you do (even if the prof.
doesn't assign writing), go to the movies with your friends (and talk about
it afterwards for hours), write for the newspaper, the literary journal, and
read something new everyday: the newspaper, a book of poems by Charles
Wright, Godel's dissertation (it's only 30 pages!), War and Peace (a few
more pages), Wittgenstein's Tractatus, Art Speigelman's Maus (1 & 2),
Hamlet, . . . .

IMHO, the most important skills to take to the profession are commitment,
curiosity, and fearlessness. Not skills? Perhaps they should/could be.
