Try this:

Put your cursor anywhere in the heading.
Select Format, Style.
A dialog box appears. In it, select Modify, Format, Tabs.
Yet another dialog box appears. In it, set a right-aligned tab at 6" (or
wherever your right margin is - this may take some tweaking).
Click Okay, Okay, and Apply.

Try typing your heading text after the number. If it's still left-aligned,
put your cursor between the number and the text and press Tab.

Let me know a) if this works for you, and b) if it made any sense.
