The way I'm using the term "technical books" here is to mean books that are
related to computer software or hardware, engineering topics, and/or books
specifically related to your work. (For example, a genetics book for someone
working in a biotech startup would be related to work for that person, but
not for someone working in a business software company.)

1. If you have a staff position, do you have a budget for books you can
purchase? How much is it?

I'm the whole company. I budget $500-750 CDN per year for books. I'm frequently over that (this year it was closer to $1500).

2. What topics do you like to purchase technical books about?

Software applications. Programming languages. Project management.

3. Do you find it unnecessary to purchase technical books with so much
information available online?

Obviously not! I can't write on the screen, or turn the pages down, or read it on the train (well, I can almost do that). I also find text on paper easier on my aging eyes.

4. How much do you spend personally on technical books per year?

See #1. Drive my husband nuts -- not the spending of money part, the storing of books part. You should see the bookshelves and boxes in the basement! We moved this summer; it'll probably take me till Christmas to get all the books out of boxes.
