In the specific case of the original post here...
Project: create a web site containing info useful to
X.
Logical steps in which to do this:
1. Get info.
2. Organize info.
3. Build site.
Now, a resourceful person would look at X and ask
theirself what info would be useful to X.
If the student was a tech writing student, and was
creating the site to be useful for tech writers, that
student should have an idea, even if a first semester
freshman. Heck, the semester's almost over. But I
think this student was a Master's student...
Instead of reflecting on all that was taught and
learned thus far, (or maybe in addition to, as we
don't know anything but what was posted) this person
posted the question of "what info would you all
include" to the list.
That's not being resourceful. That's getting someone
else to do the work. Or maybe that *is* a way of being
resourceful... but by the definition I quoted above,
it would seem that resourcefulness centers around one
person's means of doing without help.
Now, I'm not saying we shouldn't help people who post
to the list. But as has been said many times before,
do your homework first before posting to the list. Not
doing your homework first makes you look like a
slacker to us, and won't help you in figuring things
out for your own further down the road (since when is
there one side to an issue or problem?).
I replied to the student to check the archives of this
and other lists, and to use a search engine to find
info (as it's all over the place). Instead of
supplying answers, I supplied means of being resourceful.
