Anna,

What you're looking for is cataloging, document management, and digital imaging software. Pharmaceutical companies use it to catalog all their promotional and marketing materials, body and tissue parts from the clinical trials, etc. See http://www.ebi.ac.uk/biocat/ for examples of d/b software in biotechnology. If you worked at a pharma company you could retrieve inventory lists of arms, legs, tissue, dogs, guinea pigs, etc! ; ))) Gives the word "librarian" a whole new meaning!

See http://www.imaging-resource.com/SOFT/QPICT/QPICT.HTM for a review of a product (QPICT) that includes a digital imaging function. Museums and other graphics companies use this kind of cataloging software to store images and electronic documents for reproduction, etc. here's another digital imaging company. http://www.canadacomputes.com/v3/story/1,1017,3235,00.html

Our communications department is looking for software that will help
us inventory. We'd like to be able to catalog and track our equipment
(cameras, easels, display boards, etc.) and print publications (newsletters,
technical reports, displays, and patient-education materials). Does anyone
else use or know of software that will help?
