I don't think Word walks on water otherwise I wouldn't spend so much time
fixing it's problems.

You need to use the outline list format. Go down to level 4 in the B&N
dialog setup for your style definition. In the number format field, instead
of all the guff it has (1.1.1.1), clear it. In the number style, choose
A,B,C. The A will appear in said format field. This is good.

Now go to level 5, and kill all the guff (1.1.1.) before the lovely A.1.

Problem solved, me to bed. You can write it up nicely or set the style and
deliver it :-)
