Contractors, and others, know these as Change Orders. Anything the client asks for that isn't covered by the contract gets a change order, signed off by the customer before work begins. And the work is charged at a high hourly rate. Contractors love 'em--change orders can make the difference between a profit or loss on a job.
This is close but not the same thing. Extras are NOT requested. Too often, they are not even understood. In every case, they are unanticipated yet necessary for the job. Usually, extras involve decisions made at the job site or front line that if questioned will compromise quality and/or delivery of finished products when contingency plans do not cover the situation. They compensate oversights. They are unapproved. They are 'proxy' decisions made by experienced professionals taking the initiative to expedite matters (a judgment call).
