Simple file transfers between Macs and network servers are certainly possible; I've done that (with VSS, not ClearCase). I take my PowerBook to client sites and log on to their network. Novell and Lotus Domino have client software for Macs, and I'm pretty sure there was also a Mac client for NT4 (don't know about Win2k or XP), although very few sysadmins know how to set them up. If you can't convince them to buy the Mac clients, you can use Dave. Dave dances with networks <g>.

Check-in/check-out is another story. For that, you usually need to have the version control software actually running on your machine. You can either (a) install Virtual PC or Soft Windows and then install the version control software on your Windows partition, or (b) do the file transfers with your Mac and use another workstation to do the check-in or check-out.

A third option that I've used with several Mac-phobic companies when I was working offsite:
I'd check out the doc to an onsite workstation and then save it to a Zip cartridge. The Zip cart went back to my home office, where I did my writing and editing with Word or FrameMaker on my Mac. The completed file went back to the office on the Zip cart, and was saved to my little corner of the server and checked in using the onsite workstation. Several of those companies still don't know I did the work on a Mac.

Heh, heh.

While we're discussing Clearcase, has anyone used it with FrameMaker on Macintoshs? Is it practical (or even possible) to handle the check-out/check-in activities via Windows or UNIX, but do the writing on Macs?
