To add on to Kay Ethier's comments about life in Raleigh-Durham-RTP, Ken, if
your kids are getting up there in years, don't forget to factor in the
advantage of living near terrific state universities. Like all state
schools, tuition at NC state schools has been going up lately, but it's
still very reasonable. And if you've got hefty trust funds for those kids,
Duke is right here, too. Your kids will learn to love basketball! ; )

Also, Kay didn't mention our proximity to many wonderful destinations,
including the ocean (2-2.5 hours), the mountains (3-4 hours), and Washington
DC (5 or so hours). Many people here have second homes at the beach, or rent
homes there on a regular basis.

Just my $0.02,

P.S. I grew up in Madison, WI. It was a wonderful place to grow up, and the
schools were excellent. That was some time ago, so I imagine it's changed,
but I still see it ranking high on "places rated" surveys. If you can stand
the cold weather and there are jobs there, you might want to give it a shot.
It's a beautiful city.
