If you open the pdf file in Acrobat 5 and "Save As" a ps file you can
distill it again and change the job option in the distiller so that it is
saved using Acrobat 3.0 compatibility.

1. Open the distiller by choosing Tools, Distiller from the menu bar in
Acrobat 5
2. Choose Settings, Job Options.
3. Under "Compatibility" choose Acrobat 3.0 (PDF 1.2)
4. Click Save As. When the window displays, click Cancel. On the Job
Options window click OK.
You'll be back on the Distiller screen and note that the compatibility
is now Acrobat 3.0.
5. Click on File and choose the .ps file to distill using Acrobat 3.0
compatibility.

There's probably an easier way to do it, but this works for me if the pdf
was not originally created with the correct compatibility. I now set my
compatibility to 3.0 as a default and have no problems.
