My company produces software which includes various right-click menus depending where you are on the screen. For us, "click on" is used to refer to all of the items in the interface that you can, well, click on. We use "click" to refer to those items that you have to right-click to access. We find it makes it easier for the readers to distinguish between when they're clicking on a button in the GUI or when they're clicking a mouse button.
