Other industry associations let corporate sponsors pick up a hefty piece of
the conference expenses, in return for publicity, etc. I wouldn't expect
an association like STC to manage the same budgets of pharmaceutical or
drug information associations--who pay for EVERY MD who shows up.
However, in the proposal mgmt professionals assn (APMP) the four top
software/services companies foot a significant piece of the budget. And
the medical writers assn (AMWA)also sponsors all speakers.

Using your figures, if they don't charge speakers at all, that's 240 * $400
= $96,000 of lost revenue. Since the STC doesn't make any money on the
conference, they would have to raise prices about an extra $50 per attendee
to make this up...It's not as simple as it seems
