Actually, the name is Byfield, but no great matter - I've been called worse.

"In short, what I would like to see is presentations that would get writers
more interested in the technical side of the profession. I'm convinced it
can be done - but I don't know of many efforts to do it.

My personal response:
"How much effort have YOU put into making this happen?"

If you want to know about my efforts at making technology more acccessible (although not exclusively to writers), look at my two-part article on the Open Source movement on the Techwr-l web site, or at the open source project at:

http://www.debian.org/doc/manuals/progeny-debian-manual/

(I wrote the original manual, pushed to have it released under the GNU GPL, and am volunteering much of my time to head up the project). A lot of my computer journalism has the same goal, too.

So, the short answer to your question is: far more than most people.

PS - If you think you can do better, then become involved and make a
difference. You will be a hero. There is a series of leadership meetings
Sunday afternoon, May 3.

Join in, speak up, make a real difference.

No thanks. Not only do I have no need to prove myself, but I long ago decided that putting any effort into the STC was a waste of time. Nor do I have any wish to abet that organization in any way whatsoever. I gave up heroism after that encounter with kryptonite; as for dares; I stopped taking them shortly after my fifth birthday. I try to make a difference in ways that seem best to me, and I am in no way accountable to you.

"I respect kindness to human beings first of all, and kindness to animals. I don't respect the law; I have a total irreverence for anything connected with society except that which makes the roads safer, the beer stronger, the food cheaper, and old men and old women warmer in the winter and happier in the summer."
