This is addressed mostly to Deb, but I wanted to explain my reasoning.

I'd like to poll the lurkers. My question: Why lurk?

I'm not sure if I count as a lurker, even though I don't post all that frequently.

I lurk for the simplest reason of all, but one not on your sample poll: most of the time, I don't have anything useful to say. I've been on this list five years now, I think. There are some discussions that keep recurring. There's no point in airing my opinion just to cover old ground.

I post if there's an issue of fact that I can provide a useful answer for (I'm a Word maven), or if I have a query that I think Techwr-L can help me with. I skip a lot of the discussion because it doesn't have anything to do with my needs, but I'm very glad this list is here.

The other point is that while I describe myself as a technical writer, in this particular job (where I've been for the last three years), technical writing is only a small part of the job. I do editing, research, and various other tasks as needed. Plus a bit of writing. And that's why I didn't post in the telecommuting thread, despite the fact that I work in Minneapolis, and the two offices I deal with are across the city and in Cupertino (yes, I'm still working for a Silicon Valley dot-com).

I certainly don't consider myself stifled or intimidated by anyone here, though.
