For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
The question is: "Why do some lurk?"
Is it more than a tech-writing quirk?
Or are they afraid,
If mistakes are made
They'll soon be attacked by some jerk?
Perhaps they are too shy of fame?
Or afraid of the terrible flame,
That might come their way,
If "Use Word" they say,
Or "FrameMaker has merits" they claim?
The e-mail addy issue, it's true,
Might also dissuade not a few,
Since you'll soon be sunk,
Under mountains of junk,
When the spammers your address do view.
Or is it that some don't have time,
To contribute in prose or in rhyme?
Too busy they are,
(Too busy by far),
And so in to discussions don't chime?
But I like to think that it's more,
Though the flames and the junk I abhor,
Perhaps there are they,
Who have nothing to say,
(Though I admit that it's rare anymore,)
And when we have nothing to add,
I think that it's good and not bad,
To keep ourselves quiet
(I intend to try it,
to hear which I'm sure you'll be glad)!
And so now this e-mail I'll send,
To the list-lurkers good I intend,
This poem, worthwhile,
(At least worth a smile)
And I wish you a happy weekend.
