The 'ripoffs' are officially referred to as analogues. Legally, they are bone fide faces. If they resemble an exsiting face, they (the analogues) must differ by a minimum of three pixels from the existing face to be considered 'different' and 'valid' legally.

Typographer's maxim: When in doubt, use Caslon. Goudy has a couple of hundred faces to his credit, too.
