The problem's been solved, but I wanted to add one thing for the archives...

When users try to print a PDF and the characters overlap, the problem is
sometimes their printer, rather than the Distiller settings. Some
Hewlett-Packard PCL printers don't recognize the fonts correctly. See "Text
