Remember that many companies collect resumes and have staff scan the resumes into a searchable database. Candidates are "found" by a hiring manager searching through the database looking for particular buzz words like "FrameMaker", "Software", and the like.

Many resumes are never read before they are scanned in unless you send that resume to a specific person who is expecting it. Every unsolicited resume I have ever received I have sent to HR without even looking at it.

My point, unsolicited resumes get jobs. Not as frequently as networking. But if you do both, and more, you have a better chance of being "discovered".

I got my current position with an unsolicited resume. I just happened to luck out because the company was looking for another writer at the time.
