I've never seen a monitor large enough so that one can read online help at
the same time as one is referring to the screen. Without a screen shot of
some kind, the user has only written instructions to remember when he
returns to the application.

While I certainly don't recommend the number of screen shots that one might
use in a printed manual, I think they can be quite helpful in certain
circumstances.
