Another source of recommendations is something I'm proud of, the book
reviews in Technical Communication. Here are some reviewed books relating to
GUI design:

Baggerman, Lisa. Design for Interaction: User-friendly Graphics. Reviewed
May 2002.
Bergman, Eric. Information Appliances & Beyond: Interaction Design for
Consumer Products. Reviewed Nov. 2000.
Chen, Qiyang Human Computer Interaction: Issues and Challenges. Reviewed May
2002.
Donnelly, Daniel. In Your Face Too! The Best Interactive Interface Designs.
Reviewed May 2002.
Fowler, Susan. The GUI Design Handbook. Reviewed August 1998.
Galitz, Wilbert O. The Essential Guide to User Interface Design: An
Introduction to GUI Design Principles and Techniques. Reviewed August 1998.
Head, Alison J. Design Wise: A Guide to Evaluating the Interface Design of
Information Resources. Reviewed August 2000.
Johnson, Jeff GUI Bloopers: Don'ts and Do's for Software Developers and Web
Designers. Reviewed August 2001.
Johnson, Robert R. User-Centered Technology: A Rhetorical Theory for
Computers and Other Mundane Artifacts. Reviewed May 1999.
Kukulska-Hulme, Agnes. Language and Communication: Essential Concepts for
User Interface and Documentation Design. Reviewed May 2000.
Weinschenk, Susan, Pamela Jamar, and Sarah C. Yeo. GUI Design Essentials for
Windows 95, Windows 3.1, World Wide Web. Reviewed August 1998.
Westendorp, Piet, Carel Jansen, and Rob Punselie. Interface Design &
Document Design. Reviewed February 2002.

And as we all know from visiting any bookstore, there are also tons of books
on Web site and Web page design, most of whom touch on GUI design. Some of
these that our reviewers have discussed:

Horton, William, Lee Taylor, Arthur Ignacio, and Nancy L. Hoft. The Web Page
Design Cookbook: All the Ingredients You Need to Create 5-star Web Pages.
Reviewed February 1997.
Flanders, Vincent, and Michael Willis. Web Pages That Suck: Learn Good
Design by Looking at Bad Design. Reviewed February 2000.
Lynch, Patrick J., and Sarah Horton. Web Style Guide: Basic Design
Principles for Creating Web Sites. Reviewed February 2001.
Spool, Jared M., et al. Web Site Usability: A Designer's Guide. Reviewed
November 1998.
Williams, Robin, and John Tollett. The Non-Designer's Web Book. Reviewed
November 2001.

And more are being reviewed all the time, including David and Jean Farkas'
exciting new Principles of Web Design.
