As update...

Thanks to all who have responded to my suggestion - it looks like there are
in fact many of us interested and willing to spend some time pursuing this.

I have so far received nine "count me in"-type responses as well as several
notes of encouragement, and have heard from my local STC chapter expressing
their interest as well.

I will look into a way and place for us to start a discussion list so that
we can get started on this without cluttering the airwaves of techwr-l in a
day or two - for now let's keep this thread going so that all interested
techwr-lers can be involved.

I encourage all open-minded individuals, be they analysts, developers,
writers, even (perish the thought...) project managers <g>, interested in
making software development documentation work to join us in this endeavor.

I hadn't thought about approaching professional groups with this - but it is
a blindingly obvious thing to do, as was inspired by a response from my
local STC.

I look forward to working with you, with the STC, and with other
professional groups and individuals, employed and otherwise. I will contact
the groups to which I belong and I ask you to do the same...let's fix these
problems instead of living with them!

Since all of us out-of-work folks are looking to change that status, I
expect that the cast of characters will change frequently, as will
individual levels of involvement - so be it - any progress is progress, and
any involvement appreciated.

I am encouraged by the initial response and will stay with it even after
going back to work.

Ed
