Bruce, I have scanned the Web for that anecdote, and found it described
without a moral by Thomas Jefferson as you recount it, but with a moral by
Clifton Fadiman, quoted below. I can only plead that I must have read
Fadiman's version, and point out that "John Thompson" and a picture of a hat
is a much better sign than the ridiculous "John Thompson, Hatter, makes and
sells hats for ready money" and a picture of a hat 8^)
"Franklin's story mollified Jefferson, and it was generally agreed that the
committee's editorial work had improved the wording of the Declaration of
Independence." --The Little, Brown Book of Anecdotes, Clifton Fadiman,
General Editor (Boston: Little, Brown and Company 1985).
