I've taken a ton of minutes -- in some instances, my willingness to take minutes
was critical to keeping my contract position. I've seen tech writeres *blasted*
for doing a poor job of minute-taking. Corporate USA takes their meetings very
seriously, don'tchaknow.

Level of detail? Enough for the minute readers to get a good understanding of
the meeting; include diagrams/flows if necessary. More if the meeting is about
legal, regulated, union, or other important issues.

How to get over the "stenographer" hurdle? Usually, there is free food at the
meetings [always a bonus], you get the opportunity to learn a lot about the
project at hand, company politics/inside gossip, and taking minutes pays the
same as doing regular tech writing.

Try not to let taking minutes drag you down -- everyone knows it's a crummy
task. But, if you do a good job, you can quickly earn a good reputaion.

good luck,
Janet
