I really feel sorry for the client. The company where I am working uses
PageMaker for its documentation, and our Tech Comm department is seriously
considering going to FrameMaker. I came on board not too long ago, and the
people there know that I am a self-confessed FrameMaker fanatic. They have
been having the following problems with PageMaker:

1. File Bloat--this has been the case with very long documents.

2. Compatibility--I have opened up PageMaker 6.5 documents with PageMaker 7
in Windows 2000 and to my horror, have encountered black screens after
keeping the program open for a while. I have never had this problem with
FrameMaker, even when I opened FrameMaker 5.5.6 documents in FrameMaker 6 (I
don't know about FrameMaker 7).

PageMaker and QuarkXPress are both desktop publishing applications that are
appropriate for laying out brochures, newsletters, flyers, and even books
and magazines. It is not appropriate for technical manuals. FrameMaker is
much more appropriate for long technical documents.
