Now a week has gone by with no word. I've been advising him throughout
this campaign, but here I'm torn. Should he call them, to "check in," or
would that be an annoyance? He was told there would be a thorough
background check for security reasons, which might slow down the decision
making process. With this forewarning, perhaps a follow-up call might seem
pushy. Or is it just a good way for him to show his enthusiasm?

In the job I have now, I called to make sure my resume was readable after it
was e-mailed, several days later to see where they were on "scheduling
interviews," the day before the first interview to confirm the time and
directions, the day after the first interview to thank the interviewer, the
day before the second interview to confirm the time, the day after the
second interview to thank the interviewer, and a couple times after that to
follow up on questions I needed answered. I was told that my calls kept me
on their mind and did not annoy the powers-that-be. It showed my willingness
to ask questions and be persistent. It was one of the things that got me the
second/final interview.

Tell your friend to CALL!
