Rob,

I heard the word in the context of "knowledge management," that eternally
not-ready-for-primetime player.

The idea is that various departments, teams and cliques guard information
from other departments, teams and cliques. Knowledge management purports to
find ways to wheadle it out of them, and into a database at the fingertips
of all concerned parties, so that "information" can be corrolated into
"knowledge".

That's what I heard, anyway.
