Okay, took some time to plow through some of my historical linguistics books. i looked in RL Trask's "historical linguistics," April MS McMahon's "Understanding Language Change" and Theodora Bynon's "Historical Linguistics (part of the Cambridge textbooks in Linguistics series)." The only thing I could find was 'zero-derivation' also known as 'onversion.' From RL TRask (pg 33) "Conversion is the process of moving a word from one lexical category (part of speach) to another, with no affixation or other modification. For example, the adjective 'brown' becoimes a verb in 'brown the meat; the verb 'drink' becomes a noun in 'have a drink'; the noun access becomes a verb in computing locutions like 'you can access thatt utility from the main menu..." I couldn't find anything specifically on transforming nouns into verbs, nor if transitivity played a role in it. But then again, the indexes in these textbooks are poor at their best. I wonder how I got through school using them....." FYI, Affixation is the process of attaching affixes (prefix, suffix, infix, or circumfix) to a word.

So, I guess it was a good idea, but may not be right. Still, though. I'm not satisfied. i'm pondering contacting one of my old professors and tapping his brain. :-)

MN Mary, thanks for the assist, but both Mathew and I were talking about the effect transitivity had on noun-to-verb conversions, not the definitions for intransitive and transitive. ;-)
