I've seen such things in third-party books, and in internal style guides.
I consider them helpful. I've not seen them in proprietary manuals, but
have no reason to dissapprove of their inclusion there.

Every user uses things differently, so the more options you afford them,
the merrier.

But this developer may be tough to convince. Maybe if you could get him to
take a break from walking on water, he'd sit down and really listen to
your argument. <g>
