However, I received heavy criticism from my managers because my working hours were not considered long enough. I was told that the company had a 'long hours culture', the issue of delivering good quality work on time appeared irrelevant to this discussion - it was the actual hours chained to my desk that counted, not the work.

At one place where I worked, long hours were considered such a virtue that the head programmer and several others competed to see how many consecutive hours they could work without rest.It got to be a very macho competition, and included the QA team

Unfortunately, the contest started just before the release of a retail product. One week after manufacturing, I accidentally discovered a show-stopper error in the product. Further investigation showed more errors that were traced to the fact that the final code had used code from the wrong branch of the CVS tree.

Unsurprisingly, I was blamed for noticing the errors. Nobody except me seriously considered that the marathon contest by the developers and QA might have had something to do with it - even though the time stamps on files clearly showed that the errors had occurred during it.

I've been dubious about the cult of long hours ever since.
