I would not call processes and style manuals "incidental BS" *IF* they
add value.

A *good* style guide can make the writer's job easier and more efficient
and increase the quality of the finished product. In bottom-line terms,
that makes it worth the investment in time and effort to create and/or
improve the guide.

Efficient processes *can* (but not always *do*) improve productivity,
reduce redundancy and duplication of effort, improve consistency in
documentation and save time. Again, quality improvements and time
savings may make the investment in process design worthwhile.

Incidental BS? I think not (but only if these things are done right).
