Forgive me if anyone has previously taken this approach to Jane's situation
previously.

Jane, I would put a lot of effort into option #2--working feverishly on the
CV--while working on the more positive options others have put forward.

My reason for this is my belief that most men in suits are dissembling
bastards.

Just as "I'll see what I can do" generally means "no", what you were told
could have been seen as fair warning that a redundancy was coming regardless
of what you did.
