Hi Daniel,

As Beth Kane suggests, RTP IS still a big high-tech area, but your posting
did not state WHICH technology you're interested in working on. We are
assuming computers/software, but all you said was that you had a BA in
Writing. We can be a bit more helpful if you'll specify what technical
skills you have and what kind of stuff you've written, as well as what
technical area interests you.

ALL of the high-tech companies are hurting, as well as most of the companies
that buy from them. There IS some growth in pharmaceuticals, but that's a
pretty specialized area, too. One idea is to find out where the corporate HQ
of growing companies (such as Krispy Kreme and various insurance companies)
are located and see what kinds of writing opportunities those companies
might offer. You might, for example, be able to land a job, even without
specific technical skills, in the marketing/sales/customer services area of
a company. That gives you a chance to learn about the company, its
customers, and products and positions you to get the background you would
need to move into other positions. Remember, there are many kinds of
technical communication. Even hospitals do patient and staff newsletters,
and the bigger teaching hospitals could prove a fertile ground for you.

So you may have more opportunities than you think, even in the beautiful
hills of WVA!

Good luck,
Marguerite
