This has been discussed extensively in the Archives.

Pasting an image directly into Word typically causes a significant
increase in file size as compared to inserting it as a file.

Many advocate the practice of linking image files, and maintaining them in
a separate directory. This can be effective if the location of the
document and its corresponding image files remains static or tightly
controlled, but for those of us who frequently transmit Word docs to other
parties, it poses problems, and it's simpler to have the images included
in the file itself.

Read the Archives - there's a ton of info about the different scenarios
that occur and the most effective strategies for each of these scenarios.
