Dave...nobody said that animated images cannot be justified and technical.
The original question and my answer was based on animated gifs.

But the animated graphic does convey technical content! When I came upon the
original version of this image it was as a gif. The gif was just as
effective at communicating the mechanical process and I bookmarked the site
just because of this one image.
