It looks really silly to return from that to a text
format where suddenly there's a mostly-white-space
column down the left with just the occasional
heading or icon.

Suggestions?

You may want to look for a monospaced font with narrow letters. Maybe there is even a font designed for your (not uncommon) situation.

Places to look:

- Font vendors such as Adobe (www.adobe.com)

- Font shops such as The Font Shop (www.fontshop.com)

- Web overview sites such as Yahoo (http://dir.yahoo.com/Business_and_Economy/Business_to_Business/ Computers/Software/Desktop_Publishing/Fonts/)
