Go to a cooking store and research the cookbook section.

Since you don't really have to worry about production costs, keep in mind
that larger type is easier to read. I hate having to move back and forth to
see and read the instructions.

Four of my favorite and well used cookbooks (you can tell by the food stains
on the pages) are:
CookWise by Shirley O. Corriher
Bread Alone, Daniel Leader & Judith Blahnik
The Martha Steward Living Cookbook
Good Housekeeping Cookbook

The first three use the standard ingredient list followed by numbered steps.
The steps are in paragraph form explaining the technique or procedure.

Bread Alone presents the recipe with an ingredient list, followed by
instructions in paragraph format. No numbered steps, but each instruction is
indicated by a heading.

For the cooks on the list, CookWise is written by a chef/chemist who
explains the chemistry of cooking in laycooks terms. CookWise and Bread
Alone use a storytelling/anedotal format to provide background.

Martha Stewart and Good Housekeeping are good, solid, cookbooks. Martha
provides some advanced techniques and perhaps richer recipes.

Happy cooking,
