I know what you mean. I'm asking those questions earlier and earlier in my conversations these days - it saves time. And that's what really makes me testy - not so much the loss of potential income (although, let's face it, that doesn't thrill me), but the waste of time that could have been spent more productively.

The trouble is, unless I happen to be lucky and hear something on the grapevine (and my local grapevine is pretty extensive these days,I have to say; in some cases, I know who has a head cold this week), the best precautions aren't always enough. Internal politics have to be fairly intense before someone outside a company hears about them.
