It happens all the time! Employees at ERP
implementation firms, for example, often take training
courses lasting several days or weeks on company time.
Many companies pay when employees attend conferences.
Paying for training and courses and the time taken for
them is not just a technical thing. Banking managers
are paid to take several-day banking courses. Social
workers are paid to get training on the latest
legislation.

I'm surprised that someone could claim to have never
heard of this. For something like evening courses,
many companies do not pay for the time, although they
might pay for the tuition. I personally would jump at
the chance to take just about any course, even if it
encroached into my evenings.
