Poorani,

Do not install PageMaker 6.5. Or install it and immediately purchase and install the upgrade to 7.01. 6.5 has an old bug that experienced PageMaker users have learned to deal with, but it is very frustrating for new users, and 7.0 eliminated it.

Yes, Distiller is bundled with it.

Yes, you can export to Word, but only indirectly. A PageMaker publication may consist of multiple "stories." For example, each chapter may be one story. The running foot on the left master page may be one story. The running head on each individual page may be one story. A figure legend may be one story. Etc. Each story can be exported separately as an RTF file that can be read directly by Word. There are choices you can make regarding tags (for round trip editing). If you use the same style names (exact same spelling and capitalization) in Word and PageMaker, you can further simplify your life.

PageMaker 7.0 also has half-decent HTML export capabilities, so you might be able to get away with exporting the whole publication as HTML and opening that in Word. No promises on that count, though.

The learning curve? Depends on your background. PageMaker is built on printing industry metaphors and vocabulary. It's all about typesetting, page makeup, and offset lithography. If you understand that world, you'll have no trouble. If you are unfamiliar with that world, you'll have a lot to learn.

HTH,

Dick
