That depends on the kind of image. If you save a typical photograph as a
GIF and as a medium-quality JPG, the GIF will be larger. If you save a
typical screen capture as a GIF and as a medium-quality JPG, the JPG
will be larger. JPG compression is less efficient in handling straight
edges and large fields of color, while GIF compression is less efficient
with subtle gradations.

I just did an experiment with a Photoshop sample photo and a roughly
800x600 screenshot. For the photo, the GIF file was 4 times bigger than
the JPG version; for the screen capture, the JPG was 3 times bigger than
the GIF.

BTW, JPG is a bitmap format (i.e., raster rather than vector).

Yes, but so are GIFs.

Something just occurred to me. I dimly recall reading something about
Adobe using a modified "lossy GIF" format in Photoshop--perhaps it
creates smaller GIFs than some other image manipulation programs (which
may account for some of my GIF preference). Anyone know about this? Has
anyone using other graphics programs done a GIF-vs-JPG experiment like
the one I described above?
