In a previous post I wrote, "Has anyone using other graphics programs
done a GIF-vs-JPG experiment like the one I described above?"

I just did a quick Google. To answer my own question... apparently the
GIF-vs-JPG issue has been covered in some detail in other venues,
including these two sites:

Both show examples of photos and screenshots in GIF and JPG formats,
with file sizes noted. (Other sites out there give more detailed
explanations of the compression algorithms.)
