As I understand it, MCSEs might not be able to get hired as UNIX sysadmins
because the MCSE cert is 1) vendor-specific and 2) OS specific. True,
there are general networking concepts involved in getting the MCSE cert --
concepts which would probably apply to a UNIX environment -- but the cert
exists to brand the candidate as having "mad skillz" with administering
Wintel boxes, not UNIX. If the candidate also had some sort of
credential/significant experience in UNIX, they might have a better time
of it in the marketplace.

Also as I understand the thread here, professional technical writer
certification needn't be vendor tech-centric to be effective. Leave that
to the programs Adobe, eHelp, Microsoft, and Macromedia (et al.) already
have in place. Those things might help, but the underlying concepts can
still be examined regardless of the tools built upon them.

Yeah but any respectable tech writing certificate will be heavily
technology-specific. Therefore the next time the technology shifts
slightly you will become trapped by your certification. Like the C++
gurus who can't get hired for Java jobs, or the MSCEs who can't get
Unix sysadmin jobs.
