Don't know how things are in the rest of the country, but here in Silicon Valley,
what you know from your job has traditionally been the *only* education that
anyone cares about. No matter how many classes or how much training you
have, OTJ experience is the only ticket into the door at most companies here
most of the time. Entry level happens when the economy is so hot that people
with experience are scarce and companies are forced to think out of the box.
Fortunately for newbies, the economy here has been cyclical for the past 30
or 40 years, and windows open up every decade. When the next window will
be is currently the hot discussion topic at every bar and party.

BTW, while telecom may be dead most other places, it seems to be the only
thing around here that isn't, why I have no idea. If you're an out-of-work writer
in telecom or networking, you might want to take a look around here.

problem is that nobody else needs X

There are many writers who cannot get jobs because the telecom field sucks,
but they were the best writer at AT&T that anyone ever saw..but they cannot
transition to another field.
