Andrew says, "My only addition is that in the current job market, the writers who are staying employed and doing well are those that contribute more than 50% to the project. They can contribute technical knowledge to the mix, and that significantly raises their value to the organization."

I want to disagree somewhat with this. I am employed and doing well, but don't contribute technical knowledge to the projects I work on. What I DO contribute is a logical mind, one that is able to make order out of chaos. I am not afraid to stop a developer and say, "The emperor has no clothes!" I may not understand how something needs to be accomplished, but I do know how to ask simple questions like "Always?" or "Never?".
