As long as people are throwing brickbats at Geoff's suggestions, let me address his notion of using, for example, Bookman in English and Times in German.

With modern software, there is a more elegant solution. If your system is compatible with Adobe Multiple Master technology (now deprecated), you can select an attractive Multiple Master font and make slight adjustments in the horizontal axis. That way all languages would appear to be set in the same font, even though they really are not.

If you are on an operating system that is not compatible with MM, you can work in Adobe InDesign, which allows the same kind of optical manipulation of any Type 1 font (and may do so with TrueType as well, although I'm not sure about that).

Neither of these suggestions is as good as planning for the variance in the basic page design, by the way.

Dick
