That has not been my experience. "Rote derivation" is the most powerful
tool in the box when you're faced with a (new) set of conditions that
invalidate the use of standard equations. This isn't unusual in research or
product development.

If anything, my calculus classes helped me make a lot more sense of my heat,
mass, and momentum transfer assignments.
