Unless the rest of the country is different, the days
of the "plain old vanilla" Technical
Writer/Communicator are numbered.

-------------------

Technical writing is highly varied and the skills
required differ per the type of job. As several people
on the list have pointed out, the range of "technical
writing" is broad.

Here are a couple of ads for tech writers in Southern
California, neither of which stress "technical"
knowledge over other requirements, other than tool
knowledge:

2. <Company> is looking for a self-motivated, flexible
writer to work with our lead designer. Primary
responsibility is to populate interactive scripts for
multimedia development. Should be able to write, edit,
assemble, layout, organize multimedia scripts, and map
information in a structured manner. Ability to use MS
Word. PowerPoint or Visio a plus.

3. Minimum three years experience writing end user and
technical documentation in an engineering environment
for both hardcopy and online distribution. The ability
to work independently as well as in a team
environment. The ability to work on multiple
concurrent projects. The ability to work well with
Engineers. Advance experience with the following tools
required: FrameMaker, MS Word, Dreamweaver, Adobe
Acrobat, Fireworks and Photoshop.

Additional Skills
Education Requirements Bachelor's of Arts in
English/Technical Writing preferred or equivalent work
experience.
