She said she was a
communication generalist, specializing in media and corporate relationships.
This sounds to me like someone who is talking about traditional academic study within Communication departments that have areas like "Mass Communication" and "Organizational Communication." This may mean she's prepared to analyze the large-scale issues and politics that may surround writing, but this kind of study doesn't necessarily make one a good technical writer.
